What ceramides contribute
Ceramides belong to the lipid matrix of the stratum corneum. In skincare, named ceramides may be combined with cholesterol, fatty acids and other emollients. Their presence alone does not establish concentration, delivery or a finished-product outcome.
What hyaluronic acid contributes
Hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate are humectants. They help a formula hold water and can contribute to temporary surface hydration and a plumper feel. Molecular size, vehicle and the rest of the formula influence the result.
Can you use them together?
Yes. Many formulas combine humectants with lipids because attracting water and reducing its loss are different jobs. A product containing both is not automatically better; concentration, tolerance, texture and the need for a moisturizer still matter.
Which should you choose?
Choose by formula and routine gap. A humectant-heavy serum may suit someone seeking a light hydrating layer. A lipid-rich emulsion may suit dry-feeling skin that prefers more emollience. If a serum leaves skin tight, follow it with a moisturizer rather than adding more and more serums.
